Random Key Generator

The random key generator draws one of twelve chromatic roots, one of seven diatonic modes, and one of that mode's three chord paths, then prints the seven notes the mode builds on the root.

The random key generator chooses from Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian and Locrian, each with its own pattern of semitones between the seven degrees.

The random key generator starts on the root and walks the mode's own interval pattern. Ionian on C returns C, D, E, F, G, A and B, while Aeolian on the same root returns C, D, D#, F, G, G# and A#.

A chord path is a short progression written in Roman numerals, such as I, V, vi, IV in Ionian. Each one stays inside the mode's own chords, so it can be played over the key without leaving it.

Locks hold the root, the mode or the chord path in place. The next roll keeps whatever is locked and chooses again only for the parts you left unlocked, which is how a root you like can survive a search for the right mode.

The copy button writes the key, its seven notes and its chord path to the clipboard as plain text, so it can be pasted into a session note, a message or a project file.

A rolled key is a starting point, not a guarantee. The random key generator never opens, uploads or analyzes an audio file, so it cannot tell you the key of a track you already recorded — use it to begin something, and check a finished take against the key it was written in.

The random key generator runs entirely in the browser. There is no sign-in, no credit cost and no upload, and a roll works offline once the page has loaded.
