## What MIDI to sheet music draws from a .mid file

A MIDI file already stores exact pitches, lengths and timing, so nothing has to be guessed from sound. The page reads those events and engraves them as a piano score inside the browser tab.

### Reads the tempo, meter and key the file states

The first tempo, time signature and key signature written into the file set up the score, so the bars fall where the composer put them.

### Puts every pitched track on one grand staff

Notes from all melodic tracks are combined, middle C and above on the treble staff and the rest on the bass staff. Drum tracks are left out, since they are not written on a piano staff.

### Plays the file while you read

The notes are also sounded with a built-in General MIDI instrument set, so you can follow the score by ear before printing it.

## From a .mid file to printed sheet music in three steps

### Open a .mid or .midi file

Choose a Standard MIDI File or start with the example. Its length, tempo, tracks and notes are listed as it loads.

### Read the score

The score is drawn straight away. Zoom in or out, and change the tempo or time signature if the file was written without one.

### Print, save a PDF or export MusicXML

Print the score or save it as a PDF from the browser, or download MusicXML to keep editing it in MuseScore, Sibelius or Dorico.

## The limits of MIDI to sheet music here

### 5 MB

The largest .mid file the page reads. The score itself has no length limit.

### 2 extensions

The file names accepted: .mid and .midi, the two spellings of a Standard MIDI File.

### 1 grand staff

Every pitched track shares one piano score; drum tracks are skipped.

### 4 time signatures

2/4, 3/4, 4/4 and 6/8. A file stating another meter is written in 4/4 until you choose.

### 2 file exports

A MusicXML file for notation software, and print or PDF through the browser.

### 0 credits

The score is drawn in the browser and the file is never uploaded.

## Who reads a MIDI file as sheet music

### Producers handing parts to players

Export a part from the DAW as MIDI and print it for a session player who reads notation.

### Pianists learning from a MIDI file

Read a downloaded arrangement as a score instead of watching falling notes.

### Students checking notation

See how an exercise written in a sequencer looks on the stave before handing it in.

## MIDI to sheet music questions

### How do I convert MIDI to sheet music?

Choose a .mid or .midi file with the button above, or try the example. The page reads the notes and draws them as a piano score at once, which you can print, save as a PDF or download as MusicXML.

### How do I save the score as a PDF?

Press Print or save as PDF under the score, then pick Save as PDF as the printer in your browser's print dialog. The score is printed on its own, without the rest of the page.

### What happens to a file with several tracks?

Every track with pitched notes is combined onto one piano grand staff, split at middle C. Drum tracks are left out. For one instrument's part on its own, delete the other tracks in the browser MIDI editor first.

### Why do the bars not match the music?

The score follows the tempo and time signature written in the file. A file exported without them is read at 120 BPM in 4/4; set Tempo of the score and Time signature to the music's real values and the bars line up.

### Can I keep editing the notation?

Download MusicXML and open it in MuseScore, Sibelius or Dorico to add dynamics, change the spelling of notes or split the hands differently. The MusicXML always holds every bar of the file.

### Is a long MIDI file a problem?

A long file is fine for the score. The page draws the first 32 bars at once with a button to show the rest, and only playback stops at three minutes; the score covers the whole file either way.

### Does the MIDI file leave my device?

The MIDI file stays in the browser tab. Reading it and drawing the score both happen on your device, so nothing is uploaded, no account is needed and no credits are used.

### How many credits does MIDI to Sheet Music use?

MIDI to Sheet Music runs in the browser and draws zero credits.

## No MIDI file yet?

Record or upload a played part and turn it into a score, or write notes from scratch in the browser MIDI editor.
