# Audio Mixer

Layer up to eight audio tracks in your browser: set each one's level in decibels and where it starts, mute what you do not need, preview the mix and export it.

## What the audio mixer is for

### A vocal over its backing track

Add the vocal and the instrumental, then pull the instrumental down a few decibels until the words sit on top. If the vocal was recorded a beat late, move its start time instead of re-recording.

### Stems back into one song

After the stem splitter or vocal remover, rebalance the parts: drums up, bass down, backing vocals muted or panned to one side. Each track keeps its own level from -24 to +6 dB in half-decibel steps.

### A voice-over with music under it

Put narration on one track and a music bed on another, start the music a second or two early, and set it 12 to 18 dB below the voice so speech stays clear on phone speakers.

### A loop under a whole song

Switch on Repeat to the end for a drum or percussion loop and it plays again from its start until the last other track ends. A fade-out on the loop happens once, at the end of the mix, not on every pass.

## Mix audio tracks in three steps

### Add the tracks

Add up to sixteen files, open songs from My music, or load the example stems of a real song. Each track may be up to 90 MB and 15 minutes, and all of them together up to 30 minutes of audio.

### Set levels, pan and timing

Move each level and pan slider, type when each track starts and how long it fades in and out, and switch on Repeat for a loop. Solo a track to hear it alone, or mute one to hear the mix without it. The timeline shows where every track plays.

### Preview and export

Preview renders the mix you will download. Save it as MP3, WAV, FLAC, OGG, M4A or AAC, in stereo or mono; the last three are written where the browser has the encoder, and MP3 runs from 128 to 320 kbps.

## Audio mixer tracks and limits

### 16 tracks per mix

Each with its own level, pan, start time, fades, repeat, solo and mute.

### 30 minutes of audio

The most the tracks may add up to, because every track is held in memory while you mix.

### -1 dB peak ceiling

A mix that would clip is turned down to just under full scale, and the page says by how much.

### 0 uploads

Decoding, mixing and encoding run in your browser, with no account and no credits.

## Audio mixer questions

### What is the difference between mixing and joining audio?

Mixing plays tracks at the same time, layered; joining plays them one after another. To join two files end to end with this mixer, set the second track's start time to the length of the first.

### Who uses an audio mixer, and for what?

Singers put a vocal over a backing track, producers rebalance stems after a split, and podcasters and video creators lay narration over music. To play files one after another instead of layering them, offset the second track; to add EQ or reverb to one track, process it in the online audio editor first.

### Why does my mix sound quieter than the tracks did?

Two loud tracks played together add up past full scale, which would clip and distort. The mixer lowers the whole mix just enough to stay under -1 dB and shows the amount. Lower the loudest track yourself if you would rather decide what gives way.

### Do Solo and Mute change the exported mix?

Yes. A muted track is left out of the download, and while any track is soloed only the soloed tracks are mixed. Preview always plays exactly what Export will write.

### Do the tracks need to be the same length?

No. The mix lasts until the last track ends, and a shorter track goes silent when it finishes, unless you switch on Repeat to the end: it then plays again from its start until the mix ends. When every track repeats, each plays once.

### Can I pan tracks left and right or add effects?

Pan, yes: each track pans from hard left to hard right by the same law as the browser’s own stereo panner, so a centred track is left exactly as it was. A mono export has nothing to pan, so the control turns off. For EQ, compression, reverb or delay, open the track in the online audio editor first, export it, and bring the processed file back here.

### Which sample rate is the mix?

Every track is decoded at 44.1 kHz on the way in, so tracks recorded at different rates line up exactly, and the export is 44.1 kHz in stereo or mono.

### How many credits does Audio Mixer use?

Audio Mixer runs in the browser and draws zero credits.
