# Audio Cutter

Trim a song or recording in your browser: keep a selection or cut a section out of the middle, add fades, preview the exact result and export MP3, WAV or FLAC.

## Two ways to use the audio cutter

### Keep a selection

Drag the two handles on the waveform, or type the start and end in seconds to the hundredth, and everything outside them is dropped: that is how a ringtone or a 30-second clip for a video is made. Click the waveform to play the original from that moment and hear where an edge belongs, zoom up to 32x to put it on a beat, and preview the result on a loop, with a line on the waveform showing where it plays, until the edges sit right.

### Remove a section from the middle

Select a cough, a false start or a verse you do not want and the cutter joins what is left; the waveform greys out what goes. Add more clips to take out several parts in one pass. Each join is crossfaded over 10 milliseconds, short enough not to blur a beat and long enough to avoid the click a hard splice makes, and Preview join plays the three seconds either side of it so you hear the splice on its own.

### Fade the edges

A cut in the middle of a phrase ends abruptly. Fade in and fade out run up to 10 seconds each, in steps of a tenth of a second, so a trimmed clip starts and stops the way a finished track does.

## Cut audio in three steps

### Open a file or record

Choose an audio file up to 90 MB and 15 minutes, record from the microphone, or try the example track. The waveform shows where the loud and quiet parts are.

### Set the cut

Move the handles or type exact times, choose keep or remove, and add fades. The result length updates as you go.

### Preview and export

Preview plays the exact audio that will be exported. Export as MP3, WAV, FLAC, OGG, M4A or AAC, in stereo or mono: MP3 at 128 to 320 kbps, WAV and FLAC in every browser, OGG (Opus), M4A and AAC where the browser has the encoder.

## Audio cutter precision and limits

### 0.01 s cut precision

Start and end can be typed to the hundredth of a second, on a waveform that zooms up to 32x.

### 10 clips per track

Keep the selected clip or all of them, as files in one ZIP, or cut every clip out and join the rest.

### 10 s maximum fade

Separate fade in and fade out, each up to 10 seconds.

### 6 export formats

MP3, WAV and FLAC in every browser, and OGG (Opus), M4A and AAC where the browser has the encoder, made with no upload and no credits.

## Audio cutter questions

### How do I keep just the chorus of a song?

Play the track, note where the chorus starts and ends, and type those times into Start and End. Leave the mode on Keep selection, add a short fade out if the chorus does not end on silence, then preview and export.

### Who uses an audio cutter, and for what?

Video creators trim a 15- or 30-second music clip, podcasters remove a cough or a false start, musicians pull a clean take or a loop out of a long recording, and phone owners make ringtones. For effects or layered tracks, the online audio editor is the better fit.

### Does cutting an MP3 lose quality?

Exporting re-encodes the audio, so an MP3 cut and saved as MP3 goes through the encoder a second time. At 256 or 320 kbps the difference is very hard to hear; export as WAV or FLAC when the cut is going on to another editor.

### Can I make a ringtone?

Yes. Keep a selection of about 30 seconds, add a one-second fade in and fade out, and export MP3. Phones that need a specific ringtone format, such as M4R on iPhone, still need that last conversion done on the phone or in your music app.

### Will the original file change?

No. The cutter works on a copy decoded in the page and saves a new file named after the original with -cut added. The file on your disk is never modified.

### Can I cut several sections at once?

Yes, up to 10. Add clip marks another part, each with its own start and end. With Remove selection, every clip is cut out and the rest is joined in one export. With Keep selection, you export the selected clip, or all clips at once as separate files in one ZIP.

### How many credits does Audio Cutter use?

Audio Cutter runs in the browser and draws zero credits.
