## Which format the audio converter should write

### MP3 when the file has to travel

MP3 is the format phones, cars, chat apps and video editors all accept, and it is the smallest of the three. At 192 kbps a four-minute stereo song comes out at roughly 5.5 MB; 320 kbps is about 9 MB and is worth it only when the source was lossless.

### WAV when the next step is an editor

WAV stores every sample with no compression, as 16- or 24-bit PCM or 32-bit float, so a DAW, a sampler or a video timeline reads it instantly and nothing is lost between edits. The price is size: about 10 MB per stereo minute at 44.1 kHz and 16 bits.

### FLAC when you want lossless but smaller

FLAC keeps the same samples as WAV and decodes back to them exactly, typically in 50 to 70 percent of the space. It suits an archive or a music library; some video editors and older devices still do not open it.

### M4A or OGG when a player or platform asks for it

M4A holds AAC, the format iPhones and Apple Music use, and at the same bitrate it usually sounds cleaner than MP3. OGG here holds Opus, the codec of many games and voice apps, always at 48 kHz. Both come from the browser’s own encoder, so they are listed as not available in a browser that has none; AAC is the same audio as M4A without the container, for tools that ask for a bare .aac file.

## Convert audio in three steps

### Add up to ten files

Drop files onto the converter or choose them, record from the microphone, try a sample track, or open one of your own songs from My music. Each file may be up to 90 MB and 15 minutes long, and anything your browser can play will open.

### Choose the output

Pick MP3, WAV, FLAC, OGG, M4A or AAC. For MP3, choose 128, 192, 256 or 320 kbps; OGG, M4A and AAC have quality lists of their own. Set 44.1 or 48 kHz, or a studio rate up to 192 kHz for WAV and FLAC (OGG is always 48 kHz), and stereo or mono; changing a setting queues every file again.

### Convert and download

Files convert one after another so the browser never holds the whole batch in memory. Each row shows the size before and after; play the result, download it as it finishes, or download the finished batch as one ZIP.

## Audio converter formats and limits

### 6 output formats

MP3, WAV (16-bit, 24-bit or 32-bit float) and FLAC (16- or 24-bit) in every browser; OGG (Opus), M4A and AAC where the browser has the encoder.

### 4 MP3 qualities

128, 192, 256 and 320 kbps constant bit rate.

### 10 files per batch

Each up to 90 MB and 15 minutes long.

### 0 uploads

Decoding and encoding run in your browser, so the converter uses no credits and needs no account.

## Audio converter questions

### Does converting an MP3 to WAV or FLAC make it sound better?

No. MP3 discards detail when it is made, and nothing can put that detail back. Converting it to WAV or FLAC gives you a bigger file that sounds the same; it is still worth doing when an editor or a submission portal only accepts WAV.

### Who uses an audio converter, and for what?

Podcasters turn WAV recordings into MP3 episodes, musicians send the WAV a mastering engineer or distributor asks for, and video editors convert music to 48 kHz for a timeline. When the job is to shorten a file rather than change its format, the audio cutter is the better fit; to change how it sounds, use the online audio editor or AI mastering.

### Which MP3 bitrate should I choose?

192 kbps is a sensible default for listening and sharing. Choose 320 kbps when the source is lossless (WAV, FLAC or a studio export) and you want the best MP3 copy, and 128 kbps for spoken word or when file size matters most.

### Why is the converted file bigger than the original?

Size follows the bitrate you choose, not the source. A 96 kbps MP3 written at 192 kbps doubles in size and sounds the same, and WAV runs about 10 MB a stereo minute whatever went in. The file’s row says so when a compressed file comes out bigger. To keep a copy small, choose a bitrate at or below the source’s.

### Which files can I convert?

Anything your browser can decode. MP3, WAV, M4A/AAC and FLAC open in current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari; OGG opens in Chrome, Edge and Firefox but may not in Safari. A file the browser cannot read reports an error and the rest of the batch continues.

### Are my files uploaded?

No. The converter decodes and encodes inside the page: MP3 and FLAC with the same encoders as the online audio editor, OGG, M4A and AAC with the browser’s own. Closing the tab discards everything, and nothing is saved to your account.

### Should I pick 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz?

44.1 kHz is the music standard and what streaming services and CDs use. Choose 48 kHz when the audio is going into a video project, which almost always runs at 48 kHz. WAV and FLAC also go to 88.2, 96, 176.4 and 192 kHz for a session or a delivery spec that asks for one; a file can then run up to 7.5 minutes at 96 kHz and 3.5 at 192 kHz. Raising the rate does not add detail that was not recorded.

### When should I convert to mono?

For a podcast, a voice note or a single spoken track, mono halves the file size with no audible loss. Keep stereo for music: folding a stereo mix to mono can make wide effects and panned instruments thinner.

### Why is OGG, M4A or AAC not available?

OGG, M4A and AAC are written by the encoder your browser ships, and not every browser has one for AAC or Opus. When it has none, the format stays in the list marked as not in this browser. Another browser may have it; MP3, WAV and FLAC work in every one.

### Can I convert a song I made here?

Yes. Choose My music above the drop area and pick a song; it opens as the file its Download gives you, so it needs the same download right, and a plan without downloads lists the song with the reason. The conversion still runs in your browser.

### How many credits does Audio Converter use?

Audio Converter runs in the browser and draws zero credits.
